Black History Month

February is a time to honor and celebrate the many achievements of African Americans and their lasting impact on history. Throughout the month, students will engage in meaningful lessons and activities that highlight the contributions of influential figures who have helped shape our world. Black History Month provides an important opportunity to reflect on the progress made and to recognize the individuals whose dedication and accomplishments continue to inspire future generations.

February Focus is ADHD Awareness

During the month of February, focus will be geared toward ADHD Awareness. Normally ADHD Awareness Month is October, but October seems to be a very busy month for so many great causes, so we moved this focus to February.

National School Counselors Week

National School Counseling Week just came to an end on Friday, 2/6. It is intended to focus attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. We sincerely thank Mrs. Taylor Igboin and Mrs. Krista Forcier for their dedication to our students' success. They promote not only the academic achievement of our students, but also their emotional, social and mental health. Rush School is lucky to have them!

National School Resource Officer Appreciation Day

The National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) established this day in 2022 to recognize the important role SROs play in schools. SROs are sworn law enforcement officers who work with school administrators to keep schools safe. This year, National SRO Appreciation Day is acknowledged on 2/15/26.

We are sincerely grateful to all of the School Resource Officers who work in our district schools, but especially to SRO Tom Campbell. He is a valued member of our school community, and we thank him for his service to Rush School.

Attendance Matters

The most recent federal data show that in the 2020-21 school year, at least 14.7 million students nationwide were chronically absent. This means that chronic absenteeism has almost doubled from the more than 8 million students, pre-Covid-19, who were missing so many days of school that they were academically at-risk. Chronic absence refers to missing 10 percent or more of school days due to absence for any reason (excused and unexcused absences) can result in students having difficulty learning to read by the third-grade, achieving in middle school, and graduating from high school. It is important for schools and families to work together to determine the cause of chronic absenteeism, and implement strategies that address attendance barriers.

Read Across America - Author Visit

During the week of March 2nd, ERS will recognize Read Across America Week. This annual tradition begins on the birthday of the beloved author, Dr. Seuss. The entire month of March, in fact, is dedicated to reading. The National Education Association aims to encourage reading and educate people about its benefits, especially among children and young adults.

This year, Rush School is excited to have Author Donna Galanti visit on March 5, 2026! See details below for the opportunity to order copies of her books! Order forms will also be sent home with students and extra copies will be in the main office.
An order form for Rush School announces a visit from author Donna Galanti on March 5, 2026, with book orders due February 11th.

🏥 From the Nurse's Office 🩺

Illustration of diverse children showing signs of illness, such as coughing and sneezing.
With cold & flu season upon us, it important that you review the guidelines listed below when deciding whether or not to send your child to school if they are not feeling well.

Guidelines for Keeping a Sick Child at Home

Should my child be at school with this illness?
Unnecessary absences from school can adversely affect children's academic progress, and also have a negative impact on their social and emotional growth. The following information is not intended as medical advice, but as guidelines to follow until you can contact your healthcare provider.
If any of these conditions do not improve or seem to be getting worse, or aren't responding to treatment, consult your healthcare provider.

Vomiting and Diarrhea
A child with vomiting and/or diarrhea should be kept at home until symptoms have resolved for 24 hours and the child is able to keep down food and liquid.

Fever
Your child may attend school with a temperature less than 100.4 degrees. Your child must be fever-free, without fever reducing medication, for 24 hours before returning to school.

Headache
A child should be kept home if a headache is severe and does not respond to treatment, and is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever.

Earache and Toothache
A child need not miss school due to an ear infection or a toothache if he/she is under medical treatment, has no other symptoms such as fever, and can complete school work despite the discomfort.

Cold, Sore Throat, Cough
Keep your child home if cold and cough symptoms are associated with fever or swollen glands, or if they do not readily improve. Your child may attend school if there is no fever, he/she is not fatigued and is able to do school work, and if the symptoms are mild and your child can manage behaviors to prevent the spread of germs. If your doctor has prescribed antibiotics, your child must be on the antibiotics for at least 24 hours before returning to school.

Rash
Keep your child home from school if your child has a sizable rash over the body or face, and if the rash is oozing or due to a contagious condition.

Red Eyes
Keep your child home if the white part of the eye appears red and produces a yellow or green crusty discharge. If your child has been diagnosed with pinkeye (conjunctivitis, a contagious infection of the outer layer of the eye), he/she may attend school after 24 hours of antibiotic eye medication.

Encourage your children to wash their hands frequently to avoid spreading germs and disease. Please refer to the health protocol guidelines on the nurse's web page. You may contact Nurse Palma at (856) 829-7778 ext 5803 or palmak@cinnaminson.com if you have any questions.
